Indy 500 Mini-Marathon Race Report by Fifty States HALF Marathon Club member ......

Indy 500 Festival Mini Marathon Race Report by Fifty States HALF Marathon Club member George Pugh(George is scheduled to finish his 50 States Challenge (plus DC) with Fifty States HALF Marathon Club www.halfmarathonclub.com in Alaska this June!!!)

5/5/2012 Hot, hot, hot at the Indy 500 Mini-Marathon in Indianapolis, Indiana. Cinco de Mayo brought about a 70 degree start at 7:30, a twenty minute walk to the start line from Corral "P", and a wind-less downtown run that left me being smoked physically by Mile 2. I was determined to complete this half marathon, but knew in my early drenched condition, walking a lot was going to be the only way I'd make it. All that being said, everything I came to Indianapolis for came to fruition when around the 10K mark, we approached and then entered the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, wound our way to the actual track surface, and continued for one lap around the track including a brief stop at the brick finish line (I didn't kiss it like many people did, but I did reach down and touch it). After that thrill, it was another 5-mile walk-run struggle to get to the finish at 2:41:59. I highly recommend running this well managed race, if for no other reason than to run on the Indy 500 racetrack!

Carmel Half Marathon 2012 Race Review

Carmel Half Marathon Race Review by Fifty States HALF Marathon Club member Chad Dudley

Just finished the Carmel Marathon Championship Weekend Half and just missed my PR by 21 seconds at 1:54:39. Overall a great race and not many hills so made for a fast course. Note to self always make sure your gps watch is on and has a signal before you cross the start line, this cost me over a min and a PR, but that is my fault and not the watch. Stupid mistakes cost runners time and this one for sure cost me. I really enjoy the route and for it's second year the volunteers did a great job. Water stations could have been a few more of them but other than that the route was blocked off very well by local law enforcement and even some National Guard Soldiers (Thanks very much to them as a Soldier myself it was great seeing them out there). I would like to see the Corals done a little better too as it was very congested at the start of the race. Overall I would recommend this to anyone who wants a fairly flat course and needs IN as a 50 Stater!

COLD WEATHER TRAINING

Cold Weather Training
Article By: Paul “Crazy Legs” Stofko RRCA Running Coach
November 3, 2011

Cold weather training requires a little extra planning and protection before you head out the door. Your body loses heat quickly in cold weather due to convection (heat loss due to motion), conduction (transfer of heat due to temperature changes), evaporation of moisture, and radiation (transfer of energy caused by the difference between skin temperature and ambient temperature). The right layers will protect you from the elements without weighing you down. Cold can take it toll on your performance and comfort. And frostbitten skin is always a risk. But if you take some simple precautions, you can maintain your mileage in anything weather winter bring your way.

The challenge in dressing for winter training is not only to keep the winter chill and wetness out, but to manage the heat and moisture your body produces as well. Even in subfreezing temperatures your body produces a lot of heat and sweat. You can produce up to two liters per hour when running. Water conducts heat away from your body 25 times faster than air – great in summer, but dangerous in cold temperatures. Staying dry under your layers is critical and can impact heart rate, as well as comfort, dryness, and warmth.

Here are some tips for dressing in layers:

First Layer

Forget cotton. It holds moisture next to your skin. Choose the new lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics that hold a very small percentage of their weight in moisture. Performance microfibers hold less than on percent of their weight in water compared to 17% wool or 8% cotton.

Second Layer

If you running in very cold weather, you may need a middle layer to trap the warmth your muscles generate. Choose a layer that produces maximum warmth with minimum bulk. Synthetic fibers have an advantage of staying drier than natural ones.

Outer Layer

Fibers have been developed that block the elements without trapping too much heat and moisture underneath. Look for waterproof fabrics that vent.

Hands and Head

Up to 40% of your body’s heat loss occurs from the head due to a large blood supply, extra surface area, and the mucus membranes of the nose and mouth. Choose thin microfiber hats and lightweight gloves liners for your hands.

Don’t forget your feet

Cotton is a bad choice for socks. Look for synthetic socks that won’t hold moisture and become packed down when damp.
